By far, challis seems to be THE fabric for this shirt. I say this because of the loose, flowing sleeves and the option for a loose bodice. In my latest rendition of Simplicity 1693, I based my cutting on View B.
View B is composed of straight-sided bodice seams; however, I graded-out from the bust to the hem one inch to give me a little more room in the hips but not as much as the other bodice shape provided with this pattern. Most of my time, lately, has been spent towards improving my finishing skills inside the garment. This shirt is no exception. Every seem is finished either by binding or installing French seams---including the sleeves. This simple shirt is a great way to practice both skills. You will also find that slim hems work nicely and are much better than the 5/8 inch hem recommended.
If glass balls that tell the future exist, I am sure one will show me in this shirt for a better part of the summer. As part of my One Month, One Pattern building a every day wardrobe goal, this could not be more perfect. So far, this pattern is proving to be a winner for the summer season and, let's not mention, the ease of project completion.
Psst...here's a construction secret. I only used a .5 seam allowance---a .25 inch allowance for each seam line for the French seam and .25 inch for the binding.
