Pattern: Simplicity 1693
Version: View F
Sizing: 12
Fabric: light-weight white denim
Notions: navy heavy jacket zipper
Assembly time: 3 hours
Instructions: read them once, then you can ditch them
Modification: semi-redrafted by changing angle of side seams; exposed zipper back; lengthen to zipper size; straighten hem; made self bias tape at 2 inches
Recommend: yes, the changes are rather nice too
Call me crazy for making a denim shirt for summer, but I couldn't help it. I like white, and I had a inclination to try my hand at an exposed zipper. So, I took the two elements and put them together to make a summer tank. The denim is light-weight and has a stiffness to it that stabilizes the zipper weight. This stiffness also draws it away from the body making it surprisingly cool.
This zipper is 20 inches long, which I used to determine the length of the shirt and cut a straight hemline from this endpoint instead of the high-low line of View F. I then reduced the angle of the front panel side seams, mimicking the angle of the back sections to reduce fabric bulk in the front. The zipper was simply top-stitched to each back panel, resulting in the exposed zipper. Neck and arm edges were finished with 1.5 inch bias stripes and the hem was folded; these too were top-stitched.
At first I thought the zipper would be a bit uncomfortable, but it is fine. It moves rather fluidly, so I am sure this helps to avoid pinching. I like the fact that the shirt is very simple, and somewhat retro in flare, however, when I turn around there is a current element. As my second One Month, One Pattern building an every day outfit shirt, I think this shirt meets the goal of having something to wear for a regular day.
