Way back in September 2012, an admiration began for Burda 10/2012 #137.  The project was never considered, since sizing a plus size pattern down seemed a bit complicated and a waste of time for something that may or may not fit.  Plus, while I love the designs provided by Burda, I hate having to add seam allowances.  So, it was providence that brought about a dress that closely resembles the inspiration piece.

Surprisingly, every element of my dress was by chance.  The fabric, I had on hand from a project that I decided to abandoned; practically, because the fabric was not what I expected when I order online.  It was advertised as 100 percent wool, but in truth is a wool/polyester mix. I was also under the impression that it had a flat finish, but there is a monotone texture in real life. Coincidently, the color choice was similar to the finished Burda piece, but again not chosen specifically for replication. The fabric was picked simply because it was present. I also used the fabric to test Simplicity 1699 (Pep to My Lum My Darling).  Fortunately, the not-what-I-was-expecting fabric, resulted in two very nice garments.

As for pattern selection, that was a result of reading many positive reviews for Vogue 8280. A lot of people finished the version that has poufy sleeves, but it being winter at the time this dress was made, the longer sleeves were more appealing. The neckline came as a great surprise. I initially failed to notice that there were two versions: a straight neckline and a v-cut neckline. By chance, the v-cut was picked, cut, and stitched.

Since I am so happy with my serendipitous experience with Vogue 8280, I doubt I will ever create Burda 10/2012 #137.  I know the Burda dress has amazing design elements such as the zipper cuffs, but my Vogue 8280 is good enough in all the right ways---v-cut neckline, high shoulder seams, and long sleeves.  Will I make Vogue 8280 again? Well, I intend to keep the pattern in my stash. Many people have made a more formal dress from this same pattern, which would be nice to try. I also like the different variations/possibilities that exist for office attire.
