Sometime when I stare at a certain design, I automatically assume that I would look awful wearing it. I had this prejudice when it came to version C of Simplicity 2599. I typically shy away from adding bulk around my neck and bust; mainly because it tends to attract the eye to the area and often the heaviness of the fabric drags the front of the shirt down exposing things meant to be kept private. Surprisingly though, I attempted the flounces and am happy with how my project turned out. It’s my favorite in the series so far.
I have a couple of theories of why this project worked: the fabric and sturdy tank design. The tank has wide shoulder seams and darts, which stabilize the shirt particularly if you select the right size. One of the better features of this pattern is the ability to pick the bust size most appropriate. Size 10 and bust C work well for me. The bust ease measurement is 38.5 inches, resulting in a fitted but loose shirt on me. Having the fit right allows the flounces to be held in place rather than hanging.
The fabric I choose is a rayon that was only printed on one side. I ended up cutting two pieces for each flounce and sewing them together; the directions simply want a rolled hem for the edging. I attached the ruffles like instructed, but finished the seams by folding the flounce over the first stitch line and top-stitching.
This is the third shirt in my Building an Every Day Outfit series. Though the ruffles class this shirt up a bit, I do think I can wear it to many things I do. I am still inspired by Simplicity 2599 and look forward to my next creation.

ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite too. I love it so much that I made the pattern in dress form. Look for that soon. I'm kind of digging it. I hope you have as much success as I have with this pattern.
