Building an Every Day Outfit

It’s May and many people are taking the “Me Made May” challenge that floats around the online sewing world during the month. While, I am really horrible at following through with this brilliant idea (day one I forgot it was May altogether) I think it is a brilliant idea to get your handmade garments out of the closet.

Let’s face it though, how practical are the items you make to your lifestyle? I personally tend to make things a bit fancier than my every day wardrobe entails. Not many of us can wear a velvet dress to work and a ghost costume to the beach. Me Made May got me thinking, what do I wear every day and how do I make more clothing that I can wear every day?

With this in mind, I purposely searched pattern catalogs to find inspiration for my every day summer style. In steps, Simplicity 2599. I instantly liked this shirt pattern for a number of reasons but mostly for the basic sleeveless shirt (aka tank) silhouette. It also offered a number of flounce embellishments, and while I typically would shy away from such fussiness, there is loads of inspiration from the drawings.

So, this May I dedicate my sewing time to making as many 2599 as I can manage, in as many variations as I can muster. With that declaration comes the pledge to post my creations to inspire your own every day wardrobe. Check back soon, check back often.

  1. Julie, Thanks for the comment. It is encouraging beyond what you can imagine. I think I will have enough hand tailored (me made) clothes to supplement my wardrobe this summer. Which is the whole point of my obsession with 2599, right?

Ahhhh....I get so excited when people know what he is. People warned me about terriers, but he is really a sweet dog.

Good luck on your quest to contribute to next year’s Me Made May. I believe a few have started one in September too. Something like Sewn September.

I'd love to hear about your progress, so feel free to drop me a line.
