The more I mature in my sewing capabilities, the more I am understanding the importance of fabric selection. Choosing the right fabric makes for a great garment and hits the personal style mark. A great place for determining which fabric to use is the back of the pattern envelope; however, this does not ensure you will meet your individual expectation for style.
This shirt is an example of playing by the rules, but completing a garment I would not wear to the depths of hell (unless there was no other option). The body is made of chambray (aka laundered cotton) and embellished with left over challis from Flutter Sleeves 1M1P #3. I did have issues with the fabric from the very get-go. After washing, the blue dye left streaks, and unlike most freshly cleaned fabric, the weave did not loosen, leaving the same crisp feel. I thought by making a simple garment, these issues would not be noticeable, but I was wrong. Note to self: If you have problems with the fabric to begin with, you will always have fabric issues.
So, while I give two thumbs down on this shirt, I hope you ignore my personal opinion on what I would wear or not, and pay attention to the couple of new techniques. One interesting aspect of this shirt's construction is the elimination of the back bodice seam. Piece 10 was centered on a fold, eliminating the neckline gap. The back seam is not necessary for getting in and out of the shirt, since the neckline opening is rather large. With that said, the neckline gap is a nice detail that I would not eliminate. I also like my idea of a ruffle hem.
